Text Box: Inspirational column

The inexorable requirements of growth demand that we exert the greatest degree of attraction for what is perfectly in accord with us. Our highest happiness will be best attained through our understanding of and conscious co-operation with natural laws.

Our mind-forces are often bound by the paralysing suggestions that come to us from the crude thinking of the race, and which are accepted and acted upon without question. Impressions of fear, of worry, of disability and of inferiority are given us daily. These are sufficient reasons in themselves why men achieve so little—why the lives of multitudes are so barren of results, when all the time there are possibilities within them which need only the liberating touch of appreciation and wholesome ambition to expand into real greatness.

Walkathon Launch

On Saturday the 14th of March 2009 at our monthly Chapter meeting our President Dr. Mark Williams launched the second staging of the UK Chapter annual sponsored walk.  This year the funds raised from this event will go towards the Needy Students’ Scholarship Fund.  This scholarship has been renamed the Robert Lewis Scholarship in memory of the late head coach of the Holmwood Cricket team and Vice Principal of Holmwood Mr. Robert Lewis.  Being aware that not many people in the UK would recognize the name Robert Lewis we have opted to retain on the walkathon forms the name “Needy Students’ Scholarship fund”.  As this will convey a clearer picture of the intended use of the funds collected and might thus receive a more positive response from those whom we approach for sponsorship.

We believe as well that the time is right for members of the UK Chapter to go into places like Victoria station and Paddington train station fully donned in their Holmwood polo shirts and solicit support from the UK commuting public.  If you have not yet secured for yourself one of these lovely polo shirts then you can do so now by just contacting our President Dr. Williams.  They are going for only £10 each and we only have just a few remaining.  It might therefore be prudent for you to act now if you wish to secure the size and colour that is just right for you.

As I mentioned above our President launched the walkathon on Saturday the 14th of March and if you were not at this meeting you probably have not yet receive a walkathon form.  The forms will be available at each Chapter meetings leading up to the date of the event which is Saturday the 6th of June 2009.  In the event that you are unable to attend any of these meetings but would still love to support this noble cause then please contact us, either the President directly or any member of the admin team and just ask for a walkathon form.

If for any reason you will not be able to make it for this fun filled leisure walk and hence will not be able to solicit sponsorship in this regard.  You can still support the cause by just making a personal donation of whatever amount you feel happy to give.  Alternatively you can chose to sponsor a member who will be doing the walk.  The amount is just £1 per mile and the journey is approximately 8.5 miles.  I believe at this point it is safe to say that nearly all the members of the admin team will be going on the walk which is from Hyde Park to Camberwell.  You are therefore spoiled for choices in terms of whom to sponsor.

We will finish off this section by saying thanks to our artist and webmaster Mr. Stephen White for designing and preparing the walkathon form for the second year in a row.

The Robert Lewis Scholarship (Needy Students’ Scholarship Fund)

I mentioned in the previous section that the proceeds from the walkathon will go directly to the Robert Lewis Scholarship fund and I am now delighted to tell you that the UK Chapter will be integrally involved in contributing to this fund.  Not just by way of the proceeds from the walkathon but our First Vice President Mr. Fitzroy Reid has pledged a contribution to the tune of £1000.00 to kick start this fund. And at our meeting on Saturday in Birmingham where Fitzroy joined us via skype he challenged the Chapter to support this effort by doubling the £1000.00.  In other words Fitzroy is suggesting a target total of £3000.00 as the UK Chapter’s contribution to this fund.  Of this £3000.00 he has pledged to give £1000.00 so the chapter only needs to raise £2000.00 from this event.  This of course is quite easy if 10 members receive £200 worth of sponsorship on each form.  And we know from the records that at last year’s staging of this event more than one member collected in excess of £200.  So this is not just wishful thinking it is something that we have been there and done that already.

We are very please that our First Vice President has by this very act encouraged us to think big, set high goals and achieve big things.  It is now up to us to go out there and do just that.

The great achievements that Mr. Lewis accomplished by taking the Holmwood Cricket team to an unprecedented 6 time winning of the Headley Cup Trophy, the establishment of a 6th form at Holmwood and at a personal level to rise from Dorm master to the level of Vice Principal certainly deserved to be commemorated in a significant way.  The naming of this scholarship fund in his honour and to kick start the fund with a sum of no less than £3000 is just the right way to do it.

To finish off this section I would like to make a special appeal to our other celebrated achievers of the class of 87 to come forward and support this scholarship fund so that we may easily surpass this minimum target of just £3000.00.  Now I know that many of you reading this newsletter right now maybe looking on the advertisements below and saying “yes I know exactly who these celebrated achievers are” and you could be right in making that assumption.  But know that we are all celebrated achievers and winners from the mere fact that we have come together to work for the cause of good in serving our alma mater in particular and humanity in general.

I cannot finish this section without saying many thanks to Fitzroy for this significant boost to our effort and I know we can remain optimistic that this is the first of many such similar sums that we will receive from the Middle East.

Visit of the Honourable Ms. Olivia Grange

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports

We have recently received an invitation to attend the office of the Jamaican High Commission in London on the occasion of the visit of the Honourable Ms. Olivia  Grange Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports.  Details of this visit are as shown below.  I believe when we consider the tremendous support that we have received from the Jamaica High Commission and other Government ministers then we should really make every effort to attend this address from the Minister.  Let us remember that it was only just a few months ago that His Excellency the Honourable Mr. Burchell Whiteman took time out from his busy schedule to address us at our inaugural Dinner and Dance.  It was just last June that the Minister of Finance Mr.  Shaw took time out from his schedules to address us at the Holmcoming banquet.  Given the nature of our organization these are people that we will call upon from time to time.  So please let us have a big representation from the UK Chapter in attendance at this presentation.

Photos from the UK Chapter Dinner and Dance are now on our website.

You can view them here.

Chapter Updates

In an effort to reach as many past students living in the UK our President Dr. Mark Williams has suggested that we adopt the following meeting arrangements:  The London meetings will be held in North London and South London alternately and in Birmingham on the usual quarterly basis.  At our last meeting the President also indicated that it would be a good idea if we could develop the Birmingham group to the point where meetings are held every month alongside the London meetings.  This he note would be possible if we can find a volunteer from out of Birmingham who would be willing to coordinate these meetings.  We think this is a brilliant idea and look forward to see a member in the Birmingham area rising to the challenge.  Already one of our Birmingham members Pastor George Brown has kindly volunteer to host our Birmingham meetings in his home.  If any member in the Birmingham area would like to take up this rewarding opportunity to lead and coordinate the Birmingham group meetings then please contact our President Dr. Mark Williams and also liaise with Pastor George Brown.  Please rest assured that in taking on this portfolio you will receive full support from the London base members and will become an integral part of the HPSA UK Chapter admin team.
